〔AJou Economy〕 Man-Ki Min, the president of the SungKyunKwan Univ Law School said, “The Law School system is a system to explore the potential of the excellent personnel.”
Next year is the 10th anniversary of the Law School. Here are the results so far and the future tasks of the Law School system since it was enforced.
Man-Ki Min, the President of SungKyunKwan University Law School, passed both the 30th Judicial Examination and the New York Bar Examination, and he served as a chief prosecutor at the Seoul Central District Public Prosecutors’ Office. Afterwards, in 2011, he left the Prosecution, and started to teach at his old school, SungKyunKwan University, and striving to foster younger students.
He estimated that the Law School system is training the students who have various experiences and academic backgrounds to become lawyers. He also emphasized that the Law School system can develop the potential of brilliant students who is not majoring in law department.
Last year, more than 85% of the Law School student applicants at SungKyunKwan University passed the Bar Examination at once. Moreover, as for the entry rate of public service of SungKyunKwan University is particularly impressive in the country.
Since the number of graduates is higher than the number of who passed the bar exam, Some existing lawyers say the quota of the Law School has to be reduced. However, President Min mentioned that the quota of Law School should be increased, as well as the bar exam successful rate.
He said, “At Law school, there used to be students who were academically interested in the field, but now they are pursuing only to become a lawyer, so I have a great concern that the field of basic law is being devastated.”
To improve this matter, he recommends to take one or more of the basic law subject mandatorily. Also, as a fundamental solution, he insisted on increasing the bar exam acceptance rate.
Moreover, the President Min argued that for law schools to become more competitive in the future, they need to make public their acceptance rate. “If schools disclose the successful rate, then it could derives some good rivalries among the law schools”, he mentioned.
